Frequently Asked Questions

What is Weaving Arts Austin?

Weaving Arts Austin is a registered SAORI studio, as well as authorized distributor of SAORI looms, yarns and accessories. Laura Poll, the studio owner, is a certified SAORI instructor. Weaving Arts Austin is the first registered SAORI studio in Texas.

Where is the studio located?

Weaving Arts Austin is located in Central Austin. Classes are held in a private teaching studio; the address will be provided upon class confirmation.

How do I register for a class and/or book studio time?

Contact the studio directly to inquire about classes. Once you have successfully reserved studio time, you will receive a confirmation email which will include the studio address and information related to your visit.

New students must complete a brief New Student Profile and Waiver prior to their first class.

What should I expect during my first visit?

SAORI does not follow patterns or utilize the traditional instructor-led teaching model. Instead, you are encouraged to weave using your own imagination and creativity. While you will work independently, the instructor will always be available to guide you and answer any questions you may have.

When you arrive at the studio, a SAORI loom will be set up and ready to use. Once you select your materials and settle in, you will be shown the basic operating functions of the loom, which should take just a few minutes. From there, you will begin weaving. At the end of your session, you will be responsible for cleaning up your work space. You may extend your session at an hourly rate, depending on the availability of the loom.

The studio is a shoe-free space, so please consider bringing socks.

What is the materials fee and how is it calculated?

The materials fee is the cost for your woven item. The materials fee is $3.00/ounce and is calculated by weighing your project once it is removed from the loom. We do not break out prices by material, instead encouraging students to experiment with a variety of fibers. The weight of the weaving will depend on the materials used, but expect the average weaving created during a 2 hour session to weigh between 2-4 ounces.

Occasionally, we may have special yarns and materials available for purchase. In this case, the weight of the purchased yarn will be recorded and subtracted from the final weight of the weaving.

The materials fee is additional for ALL classes and must be paid at the end of your session. The materials fee is subject to sales tax.

Can I weave with my own yarns?

You will find that the studio has a wide variety of high-quality yarns, fibers and materials to choose from. So that we may continue to offer an ever-changing selection of materials, we ask that you use studio materials. Students enrolled in the Advanced Class may use outside yarns with prior permission from the intructor.

I'm running late or can't make class. What is the cancellation policy?

SAORI should be fun, not stressful. If you are running late, just let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you. If you can't make class, please notify us by email or text at least 24 hours before your class and you will not lose your studio time. If you fail to cancel, your studio time for that session will be forfeited. Please review the Studio Policies.
